Today was Immersion Day — a project-based form of learning that has as its aim the development of group problem-solving skills in a time- and context-pressured environment. The day was conceived and designed by Programme Manager and it offers a fun yet demanding opportunity for the students to confront a practical problem in a way that resembles modern work settings.

Without any information before the day began, the students were ushered into a dark, music-filled screening room at Garden Halls. Once inside, where they were given a brief explanation about the day ahead and were shown a video outlining a fictional scenario within which they will be working — in short, a virus has broken out in Oxford causing some… let us say, erratic behaviour in the infected.

The students were then given their subject-specific assignments for the day and under extreme time pressure had to provide particular, individualised solutions to the pandemic.

Following their preparation, we made our way to Artworks in Elephant and Castle, where each group presented the outcome of their research and their proposed solutions — after which, they received questions and feedback from their peers and tutors. The feedback provided a good opportunity to learn for the more formal project presentations next Friday. Everyone involved learnt a great deal — and, we are really looking forward to see the work they present come the end of the 2-week course.
